Jorge Castro speaks about his job at Canonical, the coming Ubuntu 12.04 release, the Unity shell and juju.

TH: Who is Jorge Castro?
JC: I’m 36 and was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico but grew up in the US, so my Spanish isn’t very good. I eventually settled in the metro Detroit area in Michigan and went to Michigan State University, where I studied telecommunications.

Right know I’m living in Boca Raton, Florida for a year while my wife Jill finishes her Psychology dissertation.

Food and music are two of my favorite things; I love to eat! Mostly I listen to heavy metal and hard rock, but I have been known to be more diverse (but don’t tell anyone).

TH: What’s your job in Canonical and in Ubuntu Community?
JC: I’m on the community team, I work with Nick Skaggs, Daniel Holbach, Michael Hall, and David Planella for Jono Bacon, where we each have an assigned focus on what we work on.

In the past I was working on community growth around Unity, but I’ve recently been working on cloud and server things, mostly around our new service orchestration tool called juju (juju.ubuntu.com).

TH: What inspirated you to get involved in Ubuntu?
JC: I’ve been very fortunate to have been around when Ubuntu first started but my inspiration back then was the same as it is today, the people. Ubuntu itself is great, but for me it’s always about the friends and colleagues around it that make it more than just a collection of software for me.

TH: Many users think that Canonical is “reinventing the wheel” when develops Unity. What you think about it?
JC: I don’t think it’s as much of “reinventing the wheel” as much as it’s taking charge of your own destiny. In order to compete with proprietary software we have to constantly evolve and change, even if that means going into areas that we have traditionally not gone into like consumer devices.

Making a consistent experience across these kinds of things is hard, and being able to drive the experience forward from top to bottom is a good way to do this.

TH: Ubuntu 12.04: What can we expect from it by your personal perspective?
JC: I’m most excited about what’s coming down the pipe for server folks. 12.04 will be the first release with [juju](http://juju.ubuntu.com), which will be a great way for administrators to quickly deploy services in the cloud. We can launch a hadoop cluster in about 10 minutes and 4 commands, it’s very powerful stuff that has community sharing built in. Any one in the community can write a “charm” for juju that lets us simply deploy things. Here’s a [list](http://charms.kapilt.com/charms) of things you’ll be able to deploy in 12.04 very simply. In the same way that apt-get is great for installing packages, juju will be for deploying services.

Also, overall this will be a great release for users as we’ve started to put things into play that we’ve never had in the past, like automated testing. Canonical has invested in great people, machines, and new processes to make quality the goal for this release.

We’re deploying tools like Jenkins that tie into our build processes so that if someone lands code that breaks something, it doesn’t get uploaded into the development release. So we’re becoming smarter as a team about how to test things before they have a chance to turn into a bug. This is why 12.04, even as an alpha, feels so good. And this cycle is only the beginning, as we automate more testing the overall quality of every ubuntu release should improve.

TH: Leave a message to Ubuntu Brazilian users and developers.
JC: I’ve always wanted to go to Brazil, I adore Brazilian food, and from what I’ve seen Brazilians are very passionate when it comes to food, music, and Free Software. I hope to visit your country soon and have adventures!

Nick Tait, the Unity project manager, gives an interview about your job in Canonical, your expectations about 12.04, and gives tips to help who wants to support Unity development.

TH: Who is Nick Tait?
NT: Hi there! My name is Nick Tait and I live in High Wycombe, which is about 45 minutes north of London. I share my house with my wife, our dogs, 4 harps, a piano, various guitars, and a saxophone. As you can see, music plays an important role in my life, my wife is a professional musician and I love music of all sorts. Outside of music, I am a keen amateur cook and something of an origamist too.

TH: What’s your job in Canonical design team?
NT: I am the Unity Project Manager. Amongst many things, this means that I am diplomat, a chaser, a scheduler, a facilitator, an accountant, a negotiator, a planner, a buyer and a scribe. The truly great thing about my job is the variety of the work, the people and the projects.

TH: What we can hope for Unity in Ubuntu 12.04?
NT: 12.04 is, of course, an LTS (Long Term Support) release so this means we are very much focussed on stability and quality. Now that Feature Freeze has passed the team are very much in bug squashing mode. This will help to ensure that Pangolin is indeed Precise

TH: In 2010, Mark Shuttleworth talked in their blog about “windicators”. These “windicators” were discontinued, will land in 12.04 or just in Ubuntu future releases?
NT: Working in the Design Team you quickly come to learn that ideas come and ideas go. Some ideas start small and grow and develop into concepts that then become more concrete and are worked up into full feature implementations. Others are tried and tested and do not get out of the concept phase. The key point is that the ideation process is one of evolution, so we expect some ideas to be successful and others to be less so.

TH: How the community can help in the Unity development?
NT: This is a great question as getting involved in the community and in development really is at the heart of Ubuntu. As mentioned previously, all of work stems from ideas, so if you have an idea that you have thought through and developed then we’d like to hear about it, you could respond to a specific Launchpad bug or you could make a posting at http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/.

However, if you want to roll your sleeves up and get stuck into implementation then you should consider tackling a bug or two from either the “Design changes signed off but not handed over” header at http://people.canonical.com/~platform/design/ or “Upstream projects that can be worked on” at http://people.canonical.com/~platform/design/upstream.html . If you have any questions about a bug you can find help on the #unity-design channel on Freenode IRC . The Ubuntu wiki Unity page is good place to start finding out more about how you can help with the implementation of Unity.

TH: What you expects from the Ubuntu 12.04?
NT: I am excited about 12.04 because it represents a new kind of LTS release. As you know, a new LTS version is released every 2 years. In previous releases, an LTS version had 3 years support on Ubuntu Desktop and 5 years on Ubuntu Server. Starting with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, both versions will receive 5 years support. It is great that we can make this sort of commitment to Ubuntu users. I am also looking forward to seeing key new features land, like the HUD.

TH: How is it working for the Canonical design team?
NT: The Design Team is a fantastic place to be and no two days are the same. I feel very lucky to be at the heart of Ubuntu and to be working with the teams that are shaping the future of Ubuntu and Unity. The pace can be hectic at times but when you’re involved in the Desktop project as well as projects like Ubuntu TV and Ubuntu for Android you couldn’t expect it to be otherwise

TH: Thanks by your interview. To finish leave a message to Ubuntu Brazilian users and developers.
NT: I’d like to meet up with some of you to cook a meal of Feijoada and to mix up a few Caipirinhas together. The secret to a lot of good food and drink is sharing and collaboration, and those two qualities are what make Ubuntu great.

This is the first post about Ubuntu written in English by me, so I would like suggestions about it. You may help me to make it better.

This procedure can damage your system, so make sure you understand the risks.

First step is authenticate at Terminal like root:

$ sudo -i

After this we need to add Oneiric repository with Natty repositories using the following command:

# echo "deb http://br.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list

Now is needed to create an APT rule that say to application: just update kernel packages using Oneiric repository keeping other packages with Natty repositories.

# touch /etc/apt/preferences.d/30-oneiric
# echo "Package: *
Pin: release n=natty
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin: release n=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 800

Package: linux-image-generic
Pin: release n=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: linux-headers-generic
Pin: release n=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: linux-libc-dev
Pin: release n=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: module-init-tools
Pin: release n=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: procps
Pin: release n=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: nvidia-common
Pin: release n=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 900" > /etc/apt/preferences.d/30-oneiric

Finally you need to upgrade the system normally:

# apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Just the Kernel 3.0 packages will be installed through Oneiric repository. That’s it!
